Yo Listen Up! Stop the Violence

Prince George’s County, MD has counted its sixth high school student that has been shot in six months this school year. These six students were shot over nothing more than a pair of shoes or a petty argument.

The two most recent shootings were within 24 hours of each other and left two Suitland High School Students dead.

Prince George’s County officials have only solved three of the six teen murders.

Parents, community activist, and public figures are taking a stance against teen violence. They say they are fed up with the violence, senseless deaths and plan to make a change.

Last night, WGPC 95.5 FM radio personalities DJ Flexx, Herkules, and Mr. Peter Parker addressed this issue on an hour long special segment called Yo Listen Up.

Yo Listen Up reached out to the youth to try to really get to the bottom of the madness. Most of the listeners calling in contributed the violence to social and economic status and upcoming rappers. Most youth are strongly influenced by the personas current rappers portray. They want to live a life of crime and wealth.

Flexx, Herkules, and Parker explained that the youth should not focus on materialistic things and should focus on education and become leaders. They offered mentoring programs for young minority men to join and encouraged positive minority men to become mentors.

In order for this epidemic to stop the community has to unite and love, guide, and support the youth. It really does take a village to raise a child.

Until next time…Peace, Love & Politics

The situation is very sad and I truely believe that it does take a village to raise a child. I fault most parents only because a lot of parents focus so much on materialistic things like clothes and shoes and not enough time on education. They focus on when the next pair of Jordan’s come out instead of when your next homework assignment is due. I believe that if the parents raise there child in the right way and spend time with them these terrible things wouldnt happen .

Ridiculousness of the police department, sometimes I wonder if its still a matter of race as to why certain crimes are solved. PG has to do better.

This was a really powerful post. This is a serious matter that “we” as a community must come together to solve. We need focus our attention on our youth and realize the help they are calling out for.
